On October 21, 2019, President Donald Trump announced that he will name Chad Wolf the new Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, replacing the current Acting Director, Kevin McAleenan [see blog]. Wolf will take over as Acting Secretary after Veteran’s Day.
Chad Wolf is currently the Acting Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Strategy, Policy, and Plans, a position for which he has been nominated but not yet confirmed, and the incumbent Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Strategy, Plans, Analysis, and Risk. He has served in other non-immigration capacities at the Department of Homeland Security during both the Trump and George W. Bush administrations [PDF version].
President Trump has not yet announced who he will nominate to the position of Secretary of Homeland Security on a permanent basis. There has not been a Senate-confirmed Secretary of Homeland Security since the resignation of former Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen last April [see blog].
