The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) announced [link] that applicants applying for naturalization using the 04/01/24 edition of the Form N-400 will be able to request a Social Security Number (“SSN”) or replacement Social Security card when submitting the Form N-400. Naturalization applicants would otherwise need to separately visit a Social Security Administration (“SSA”) field officer to request a SSN or new or replacement Social Security card. The USCIS notes, however, that the SSA may, in its discretion, request additional information.

It is important not note that the ability to request an SSN or replacement card on the Form N-400 is being introduced with the 04/01/24 edition of the Form N-400. The USCIS explains that “[a]pplicants who use the 09/17/19 edition of Form N-400 will not have this option…” The new edition of the Form N-400 is available for online filing as of April 1, 2024.

Before filing any form with USCIS, petitioners and applicants should consult the USCIS website for the most up-to-date forms and form filing instructions. The decision to add Social Security questions to the Form N-400 will make it easier for prospective naturalized citizens to take care of SSA-related tasks efficiently. We discuss many naturalization issues in a designated section on site [see section].
