On May 27, 2016, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published an updated edition of the Form N-470, Application to Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes [see article].1 The new edition, dated May 11, 2016, will be the only edition of the form that USCIS will accept starting on July 26, 2016. Accordingly, it will be important for applicants to ensure that they are using the May 11, 2016 edition of the Form N-470 starting on that date. Applicants filing the Form N-470 may continue to use the January 3, 2013 edition of the Form N-470 until July 26, 2016.
The Form N-470 is for a lawful permanent resident who must leave the United States for one year or longer for certain employment purposes, but who wants to maintain his or her status as a permanent resident for naturalization purposes. In dealing with questions of eligibility for naturalization, one should consult with an experienced immigration attorney.
