On May 25, 2015, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it will now enable online filing for two naturalization-related forms [PDF version].
The following two forms can now be filed online:
Form N-565, Application for Replacement of Naturalization/Citizenship Document; and
Form N-336, Request for Hearing on a Decision in Naturalization Proceedings(Under Section 336 of the INA).
The Form N-565 is used to replace a naturalization certificate, certificate of citizenship, or repatriation certificate. The USCIS notes that individuals may also use the Form N-565 to apply for a special certificate of naturalization as a U.S. citizen that will be recognized by a foreign country. We recently posted a news update discussing that the Phoenix Lockbox Facility now accepts Form N-565 applications and that applicants may pay with credit cards [see article].
The Form N-336 is used to request a hearing before an immigration officer if an applicant’s application for naturalization was denied.
The Forms N-565 and N-336 are the second and third naturalization-related forms to have online filing enabled. The Form N-400, Application for Naturalization can also be filed online. To learn more about the current version of the Form N-400, please see our full article on the subject [see article].
Finally, the Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card also has online filing enabled. In July 2017, the USCIS implemented a mobile filing option for Form I-90 applicants [see blog].
The USCIS explains that in order to file any of the four aforementioned forms online, the applicant must create a USCIS online account on the USCIS website. The news release explains that the filing system is now completely mobile-responsive. In addition to filing the applications, applicants who file online may monitor their case status, respond to requests for evidence, communicate with USCIS through a secure inbox, and change their address information all from their online account. Attorneys and accredited representatives may also file online on behalf of a client after following the requisite steps.
An applicant filing the Form N-565 or Form N-336 electronically may pay the filing fee and submit evidence through his or her online account. A Form N-565 applicant will have to mail his or her original certificates and photos to the Nebraska Service Center after filing online, however.
Although online filing is now enabled for the Form N-565 and Form N-336, the USCIS will still accept the current paper versions of both forms. Furthermore, paper filers may still create an online account to track the status of their applications.
